Air and Heat Guide exists to give homeowners accurate, practical and safe information about heating, cooling and indoor air quality. This page explains how we create, review and update our content.

How we research

  • We start from primary sources: manufacturer installation and service manuals, product specifications, U.S. Department of Energy and ENERGY STAR resources, EPA guidance, and utility and state program websites.
  • Error code guides are based on the manufacturer’s official documentation for that brand and equipment type. Codes can differ between models, so we always recommend checking the label on your unit or its manual.
  • Cost guides combine published pricing, manufacturer data and industry surveys. Prices vary widely by region, home and installer, so we present ranges rather than single numbers, and we date every cost guide.

How we write

  • Every guide is written for homeowners, in plain English, with the most likely causes and safest checks first.
  • We clearly separate what a homeowner can safely do from work that requires a licensed professional, such as gas, refrigerant or high-voltage repairs.
  • We may use AI tools to help with research and early drafts. Every article is edited, fact-checked and approved by a human editor before it is published, and no article is published without that review.

Updates and corrections

  • We review our guides regularly, and cost guides at least every six months. The date of the last update is shown on each article.
  • If you find an error, please tell us through our Contact page. We will review it and correct the article if needed.
